I've been looking at 314.27(D)and the way i read this you do not need a fan rated box if your box screws are not the sole support of the fan so if I had some screws going thrue the box in to the wood i would be ok. Any views on this would be of some help thanks.

Re: Ceiling Fan box

The way I read it is if your fan support screws pass through the J-box and into the wood you are OK. There are plastic fan boxes that are basically the same as regular plastic 4-0 boxes except there are no tapped fixture screws in the plastic 4-0 box. Instead there are holes (and screws furnished) so the fixture screws can pass through the plastic box and into the ceiling joist or block.

For $10? I would use a fan rated metal box.

Re: Ceiling Fan box

The only time i would think of this type of installation is when replaceing an exsisting light fixture (luminare ) with a paddle fan and the box is not a fan rated box, And i know i can put some screws in the wood good anough to hang on the fan.

Re: Ceiling Fan box

AWWT,metal fan rated boxes need screws to support them....So what is the difference ??? Actually the plastic boxes are less likely to be affected by dynamic load. These have only one means of support, whereas a metal fan rated box has the 10/32 screws on the box and the screws that support the box itself. So no matter what the entire installation is dependant on the screws that secure to the lumber
