Believe the speed control and dimmer is a Leviton. Owner is complaining about it making a low hum. Anyone else had this, found out why and fixed it?

Re: Ceiling Fan Dimmer Switch

nvcape,

In my experience, the humm is in the fan motor itself and will be more pronounced at certain speeds and quieter at other speeds.

I would consult the fan manufacturer's customer service to verify control compatability.

As a rule, in my experience, less expensive fans humm at any speed, especially when the local is quiet, and the client is sensitive to noise.

nvcape,

If the speed control is continuously variable the motor will likely hum. The speed control switches with set speeds (low - med - high etc.) will be much quieter and will usually advertise that on the packaging.

Re: Ceiling Fan Dimmer Switch

I just got off the telephone with a lighting dist. in my area because I have the same problem. I have installed about 5 variable speed electronic fan controls on the fans in a new house and every freaking one was humming(sounded like the neighbor was mowing his yard). The rep told me that it was a 60hz hum and that I needed to install a 3 pos. fan speed switch. Wish they had told me that when I bought the fans from them.I am going to buy a P&S Dehummer fan control and see how that works.I'll let you know.

Re: Ceiling Fan Dimmer Switch

wayne; did you say you will get the 3 speed "dehummer" fan speed control??

i have the number for Pass and Syemour co.

the number is : slider type 94084-I(ivory)
rotary type 94003 ( 3speed)
94004 (4 speed)
might ask what verson cover you want it come 3 flavors.

it genrally work pretty good with most fan but some fans espcally very crappy units are the worst but have to try to see if that clear it and also make sure the fan speed at the fan pull chain set at "high" speed other wise if other postion it might not run at all

merci, marc

The answer has been stated above a few times.

Get a speed control with set speeds (3 speed, 4 speed, etc.) The continuously variable (like a dimmer) speed controls make the motors hum. Look for the word 'Quiet' on the packaging.

Dehummer was also mentioned. If there are any remaining questions, maybe re-state the remaining question?

Re: Ceiling Fan Dimmer Switch

And remember, don't throw good money after bad. The Blue Light Special $29.95 paddlefan will have motor core laminations so thick that no amount of control "dehumming" will do any good. The laminations will slam against each other just like a cheap ballast. Time and money are better spent on the quality of the motor than anything else.
