What would you do if you had a ceiling fan to install and the wires are TOO short? The down-rod HAS to be longer than the one supplied with the fan.

As always I look forward to options, opinions and thoughts in general.

Happy Labor Day to all.

I don't see a problem butt-splicing in this scenario.

I was starting to call UL to come out and re-evaluate the fan for compliance but my boss overheard me and started beating me. :D

LMAO.

I can only hope your boss is as sharp as you ...otherwise I imagine the beatings would be numerous :)

What I have done is extend the fan leads using butt splices in the down rod.
I take the top of the fan off and rewire with 14 stranded. It doesn't take long. Do I have to look for a butt splice in conduit violation? I'm cooking and watching the Marlins lose another one.

Are you telling me a down rod isn't a painted and drilled/threaded piece of RMC?

Yes.

For one at best it's IMC.

Number two even for the IMC article to apply that chunk of pipe will have to have a listing lable saying IMC.

By your way any tubing with threaded ends would be subject to the NEC.

The gas fitter is going to be upset when they get hit up for lack of supports.

They set up the rules, I just use them.

What? Why wouldn't it be? Even if its IMC 342.56 takes you to 300.15.

Bob its conduit!

Chris you may not want to accept it, but a round hollow metal tube with treaded ends is not a NEC 'conduit' of any type unless it is listed as such. Really.

Just like you can't use the pipe fitters black iron for a raceway as it is not listed as RMC or IMC.

Truthfully if we say that the NEC considers the down rod 'conduit' we can not use it to support the fan.

Conduits do not support, they get supported.

The down rod, if bought from the fan manufacturer is likely listed as a "Fan Accessory"

It's all in the listing.
