Owner wants to have two ceiling fixtures replaced with two ceiling fans with light fixtures. The ceiling is suspended tin, about 4 inches down from wood joists. The existing pendent light fixtures are attached to a wiremold surface mounted box. The owner says there is a steel wire attached to the floor joist system above the suspended tin ceiling. My concerns are:
1.The wiremold round box being used to support ceiling fan
2. The steel cable supporting the wiremold box
3. Without removing part of suspended ceiling does anyone know away to mount approved ceiling fan box and be feed from surface mounted wiremold?

I am not sure I follow but it sounds like a suspending ceiling hung with What??? wire and then the boxes are hung by wire also. This does not sound like a code compliant installation.

How would you support a fan--- the wire is olding the box but the wiremold round box is not capable of holding a fan. If you changed the box to a fan box it is still supported by wire--- I guess---

I wouldn't touch it unless i could get in the suspended part and frame down to the ceiling to rigidly support the box.

You stated there is structural wood 4" above the existing fixtures. If you can remove the wiremold fixture box, and then using a combination 3/8" coupling-lag with some 3/8" rod screwed into it to run up thru the ko and into the wood above.Wrench the rod in tight to the wood. Then cut off the excess and use washers and two 3/8" nuts above and install a new fan rated wiremold box to secure the box to the surface of the "tin". The lags I am talking about are a coupling welded to a lag point. Common for hanging rod from beams in drop ceilings.

That is if the wood is directly above the box. I assumed he meant there was structural wood above the ceiling not necessarily the box.

Good Idea, the fastner is sometimes called a Sammy

Yea, thats what I was trying to remember but couldn't. When I go thru a box of those I try to keep at least one so when I stop at the nuts and bolts store I can just carry it in and ask for more of the same.
