Hello. Picked up and replaced a ceiling fan pull chain speed switch.

The numbers of the new switch didn’t match the older one which was replaced.

Old pull chain going counter clock wise
L-2-1-3

New pull chain going counter clockwise
L-1-2-3

I wired the new switch with the colors going to the original color to number lay out.

Pull fan functioned high, low, mid, off.

Continuity showed new switch was L-1,L-2,L-3 OFF

I switched wire connections 2 and 3 and achieved high, mid, low, off

I opened up the old switch to see if it was more than a single pole quadruple throw switch ( if that’s the correct term)

Thinking there may be two connections connected at the same time

I couldn’t tell

I looked at switches on google and did see one switch that said it performed this way
L-1,L-2&3,L-3,off

If the fan I installed the switch on needed a switch like like the one above (jumping 2&3) would it still work and change speeds properly or would it not.

The fan seams to be working correctly, think I’m good to go or should I investigate the old switch more?

Thank you.

Because it's healthier for a motor to spend as little time as possible speeding up.
Awesome. Then get the common and high in the right spot... Otherwise, click it twice.
Just so you know larry, it doesnt matter a bit...
Curious if this is a customers fan... Anyway.

A friends
If you can get it on medium, cut the chain then just use the wall switch ;)
that was my original thought.
I think I can get a 3 wire from the attic to the switch. And I already ran a 3 wire to a junction box in the last year so he can operate the light from the wall and fan from chain.
Chain broke at the end of June and he kept saying he wanted to get another fan.
Last week he asked about changing the pull chain.

My main concern is if the capacitor in the canopy needs to be fed with two legs at the same time for some reason.

Guess I’ll just leave it as is.
Or ( I asked him to pull the pieces out of the garage) play with it alittle more to confirm the three are separate switches legs.

Thanks all. Stay well and Happy Thanksgiving.
