Adding a fan in a residential living room that has recessed lighting controlled from a switch. The fan I will be adding is fan/light. My question is can the fan solely be wired to the receiver in the canopy and be controlled from the remote? Or do I need a wall switch as means of disconnect for the fan? I read the article 422 it states any motor appliance (I know it’s not a appliance) not over 1/8 hp the breaker can serve. Any input would be appreciated thank you

Good question. Never really thought about it..

used to be until the 2017
422.31(A) in the 2017 has language added about “within sight”

422.31 Disconnection of Permanently Connected Appliances.
(A) Rated at Not over 300 Volt-Amperes or 1∕8 Horsepower.
For permanently connected appliances rated at not over 300 volt-amperes or 1∕8 hp, the branch-circuit overcurrent device shall be permitted to serve as the disconnecting means where the switch or circuit breaker is within sight from the
appliance or is lockable in accordance with 110.25.

there is an additional note in 422.34 regarding unit switches.
422.34 Unit Switch(es) as Disconnecting Means. A unit switch(es) with a marked-off position that is a part of an appli‐ ance and disconnects all ungrounded conductors shall be permitted as the disconnecting means required by this article where other means for disconnection are provided in occupan‐ cies specified in 422.34(A) through (D).

Then in C,
(C) One-Family Dwellings. In one-family dwellings, the service disconnecting means shall be permitted to be the other disconnecting means.

So.. Install a locking device on the breaker and your good to go.

That being stated I don’t have any of those requirements…

I wired them for years with the fan hot all the time back to the breaker..
I installed a new ceiling fan/light combo with a fancy light/fan remote in my living room Bypassed the remote for the light and wired it directly to the black wire. (Blue wire to black wire)
Wired the remote receiver to the red to work the fan with the remote. Turned the fan on, laid the remote down (somewhere) and haven’t touched it yet.
that was over a year ago..
