How long does it take for a ceiling fan installation:

Remove existing fixture.
Remove existing box, and install support box.
Unbox and Assy. Fan with light-kit.
Hang fan and balance.
Remove wall switch and replace with new control.

Re: Ceiling Fan

Ryan,

We have been keeping actuals on fan installs for the last four years, so now we are trying to get a poll of actuals.

Re: Ceiling Fan

Al,
You must be installing a lot of fans, your close to the average, and close on the low end, so far.

Re: Ceiling Fan

I've never had to balance a fan. I guess I've just had better luck than most!!!

I didn't factor any travel time things like that into my statement, so I'm not saying I would only charge for an hour. But, as far as just taking down a light, throwing in a new box and hanging a fan, I would say an hour to an hour and a half.

I haven't hung a whole lot of them (maybe 15), but that is about the time I take.

Re: Ceiling Fan

Ryan,

I will post the actuals, and some of the down falls of fan installations. I hope the information can help us all with fan installs. There is no right or wrong answer to install time conditions vary and not all fixtures are the same.

Re: Ceiling Fan

How long does it take for a ceiling fan installation:

Remove existing fixture. Actual avg. (.3)
Remove existing box, and install support box. Actual avg. (1.2)
Unbox and Assy. Fan with light-kit. Actual avg. (1.25)
Hang fan and balance. Actual avg. (.34)
Remove wall switch and replace with new control. Actual avg. (.25)

Total Actual avg. (3.34) hrs.

Items that may vary install time.

Work area not clear.

Existing wiring, wrong polarity, wrong wire size for circuit protection, 14ga. on 20A breaker.

When removing existing box, it may have more than one cable, or the existing wires may be short, or wiring is frayed, or rot.

Unbox and Assy. Parts may be missing, or damaged. Assembly time varies with fixture.

Remove wall switch and replace with new control. Customer has wrong control or no control for fixture.

These times are for existing lighting installations, new installations require cable installation, for fan and switch. Boxes

Re: Ceiling Fan

Hour and 15 min. to unbox and assemble a fan and light kit OUCH! Depends on the fan but some can be done in less than 15 min. (snap together type) and the longest one is the cheep ones that you even have to assemble the motor housing 45 min.
Of course the cordless drill comes in handy with the long bit extention.

Re: Ceiling Fan

I agree with Satcom and will add a few we see in the 'old' NorthEast.

Plaster ceilings crumbling.
Ceiling beams spread too far apart for the box support.
Old wire that has to be addressed - sometimes requiring a complete rewire.
Cathedral ceilings.

A BAD DAY, A VERY BAD DAY :(

If I finish in under three hours I consider it a bonus, I always price for 1/2 a day with the caution we will see when we open up the existing box.
The ones that we finish sooner, always are followed by a cup of coffee and conversation such as "wish they were all that easy" :D

Re: Ceiling Fan

I just did two ceiling fans yesterday. One in a kitchen, the other in a bed room. Both rooms had no ceiling fixtures(luminairs), so I had to cut in new boxes and switches. Fortunately, there was an unfinished crawl space above both rooms. I did the job in 5.5 hours at $40/hr.
I work in the Worcester county area of Massachusetts. I think you guys are right on with 3 - 3.5 hrs/ fan. After reading these posts, seems I don't charge enough.

Pierre, I agree pricing for the 1/2 day is the way to go.

The actuals were tracked for four years, and the figures can be skewed for several reasons, one being the electrician doing the work, for the period tracked, we had four electricians, two were work demons, and two were demons at work, so these actuals, are more of a real world work output.
Conditions found and type of fan can also skew the time required.
What I have learned from tracking actuals, is I do not want to flat price fan jobs.

Re: Ceiling Fan

I would pay money to see somebody (Ryan ) add in a ceiling fan in an hour with good craftsmanship. I know I'm fast but damn not that quick. I'd say on average about 2 1/2 hours. Their are alot of veriables though.

Re: Ceiling Fan

Jump on one in a 70 year old house. Knob and tube, metal box with hickey and splice thru, plaster and lath ceiling, no attic access, etc. Add the fact that someone in the past has installed a flush mounted 90C ceiling fixture and the wiring insulation breaks off in your hand. All in all a bad day. No way would I give a price up front. Not your typical install, but hey, we're talking generalities.

Re: Ceiling Fan

Min 75 bucks per fan.(for a 75 buck job,,,that would be remove an old ceiling fan and install new one,,no updates on switch/controls,,that would be extra) and it goes up from there. just depends on the fan, the conditions and dont forget the etc..as mentioned in a few post,,,just depends what you get when u remove old light fixture or ceiling fan...

if its a totally new install(new box, wire, switch etc) in an old house,,,then i charge 50 per hour,,,and usually figure 1/2 day per fan plus material.

then there is the special price,,,,go in for the 75bucks, while there u really see the little old lady isnt doing good in the pocket book...have settled for a cup of coffee, but thats a gut call...cant blame or accuse me of ripping off the old people!

CS
Good for you, I have done the same myself. It doesn't pay the bills, but it feels much better than getting paid!!! Remember, if we are lucky we will be there one day - as a matter of fact, I am getting closer now that I think about it :D
