Hi guys, I like to ask a question if i can us a metal bar box for a ceiling fan? Or does it have to be a ceiling fan bar box ? What is code the work is in a new construction and will be inspection.

314.27(D) Boxes at Ceiling-Suspended (Paddle) Fan Outlets.
Outlet boxes or outlet box ssytems used as the sole support of a ceiling-suspended (paddle) fan shall be listed, shall be marked by their manufacturer as suitable for this purpose, ...

Be sure to look inside the box that the big 10/32 screws are in the box...

They also sell rated and marked for usuage, extention support bars that are rated and UL listed, I'd buy both.

I use a metal octagon attached to a 2x6 or 2x4. I then fasten the fan to the wood not the box. This can be done in lieu of fan boxes.

If you attach the fan to the box it must be fan rated.

When I satarted with the company I work for they used 4" pancake boxes for fans in new construction. I mentioned box fill for 14/3 and was told - "you have to allow for the canopy volume." So to feel safe I made sure that I alighned the two ears on the box with the rafter or support board I had installed and always ripped the two ears off the box. Then at trim I always used two #10/2 screws to hold the bracket in place. I would run the screws trought the holes behind the missing ears into the board. Believe me when I say I hung my #200+ from them to make sure they were secure. Fortunately with all these new fans coming out with remote the pancake and smaller canopies do not have enough room so my boss finally broke down and buys the pvc wrap around fan boxes. Man I love those things.

You can use a standard bar box but you cannot use it to support the fan. The fan would require independent support. IMO using a fan support box is the best method of new construction. I would use a Arlington saddle type box if a ceiling joist were in the right location. You can also do as Dennis mentioned, install a piece of wood and use the same saddle box to get the fan where you want it.
