What is the minimum height requirement for ceiling fans in a dwelling? Having trouble finding it in the code

Re: ceiling fans

i can`t find one but has to have blades 3 ft from tubs edge :D At 8 ft a 6 ft person can still lift thier arm and get whacked :D

Re: ceiling fans

Thanks for trying, all i found is swimming pool codes 680.22,680.43, and 314.27,and 422.18 and none of which give a requirement. Maybe it is under the archetectual codes.

Re: ceiling fans

I agree with "abode electric" I think I remember seeing 7' to the blades according to the manufactures directions.

Re: ceiling fans

Could this be an old code? I have heard this rumor and been unable to find it before. ;)

Re: ceiling fans

Seems to me it would depend on who lived there. I knew a fellow who was about 4 feet tall. Then there are the pro basketball players.

Common sense says it would be about 7 ft. You can't get much higher with 8 ft. ceilings. I would go 8 ft. min with higher ceilings.

Re: ceiling fans

thanks for the effort guys, frustrating there has to be a code somewhere if not maybe this should be an adendum to the 2008 code.

Re: ceiling fans

Is it possible that the issue of height is not an NEC code issue but a building code issue and perhaps this is why it has not yet been found? Unless there is a concern of a potential electrical hazard, should the code address the situation?

I guess I'm starting to think this may not be a code issue at all.

Re: ceiling fans

I'll post this quote again here:

"UL 507 states Ceiling Fans suspended from 7 feet to less than 10 feet (blade height to floor) nust have a minimum thickness of edge of blade 3/16"

I don't know where all this applies, since I don't know where to find UL507.

Re: ceiling fans

Most ceiling paddle fan installation instructions stipulate that the fan blades are not to be less than 7 feet from the finished floor.
If you need an NEC reference, 110.3(B) would be the one.

Re: ceiling fans

yep, 110.3(B) Requires us to follow manufacturer's instructions.
I agree.
Good Call Pierre.

Re: ceiling fans

An 8 foot ceiling in my opinion is obsolete. People are on average taller than they were 60 years ago.

For that matter, my shoe size is "obsolete" and I often have to buy oversize shoes to get shoes that are wide enough for my feet. I was told by shoe sales lady that some older men now have to buy children's shoes because of trends in foot size!

Re: ceiling fans

look on the top of the fan, and it will say 7ft
to low end of the blade.

Re: ceiling fans

There are some people that have a clearance problem with 7 ft but they are used to looking where they walk and it is not a safety problem.

By the Pierre, you have to post your picture in your profile so we can all see how handsome you are. :D
