Just wanted to get some of you'll opinion on this. At a house that I will be wiring, the customer will have several ceiling fans on their porch that the rafters will have decking covered with metal roof. The underside will be left open (approximately 12' sloping to 10'). I plan to sleeve the NM cable (romex) with EMT for looks. What do you'll think about using a fan rated metal box screwed to the bottom of the rafters for the fans to be attached to? Code compliant? Thanks,

Could the NM cable placed inside EMT be allowable under 334.30 since it would be providing protection from physical damage. I guess I would not have a problem with only the exposed portion being run through EMT in the porch roof area.

If it is exterior, NM is a no go.
It seems to me that the definition of "Damp Location" leaves open the possibility that some locations under a "roofed open porch" may be considered "fully protected" from weather, and thus could be considered a dry location. If so, I would think that alongside the rafter of a roofed open porch would be a good candidate for being considered a dry location, which would mean NM cable is allowed.

Cheers, Wayne

Maybe. Not worth getting a possible red tag/fail IMO.

Agreed.

I believe you also have to ground the EMT, even if you're using it as a sleeve. IMHO, fog and mist count as dampness so, if the installation is outside, while the NM cable probably will not get water wicking up inside the jacket it is still outside. Again, just my opinion.

Now that I think about it, if the EMT is terminated into a JB at one end and that JB is grounded then so is the EMT.

I thought on metal piping have to be grounded .

They actually give us some relief, the general rule is 250.86 but exception 2 applies here.

250.86 Other Conductor Enclosures and Raceways. Except as permitted by 250.112(I), metal enclosures and raceways for other than service conductors shall be connected to the equipment grounding conductor.

Exception No. 2: Short sections of metal enclosures or raceways used to provide support or protection of cable assemblies from physical damage shall not be required to be connected to the equipment grounding conductor.

Now how long is 'short'? Only your inspector can answer that.
