Is it in the NEC or IRC that tells if a minimum distance from the blade is required for a smoke detector?

Short of having a local jurisdiction code, there is nothing in the NEC, or any of the International codes. If it where going to be in any code it would be NFPA 72, and I do not believe it is addressed within it. There is distances of 36 inches from registers producing 300 fpm. There has been a lot of new technology in the smoke and CO industry. I would recommend reviewing the installer guide for the type of detector you are using, and check with your AHJ for there guidance.

I just completed two training sessions on aspirating systems versus passive and the time difference in notification is dramatic.

Smoke detector placement is 3' from bathroom doors with tubs and/or showers inside; 3' from ducts or vents and ceiling fans: NFPA 72 29.8.3.4(5) from the 2010. See IBC 2006 907.2.10.1.2 for more, or, the 2006 IRC
