A receptacle in a box which is suspended by flexible conduit from a ceiling box.
Just because I can picture it (and am sure I have seen it) does not mean it complies with codes.

To complicate the mater, the application for which I am thinking about is a commercial kitchen (serving work tables in the middle of the room) so GFI receptacle and weather-tite flex conduit.
