Ceilings, Roofs, Access

I'm sure some of you have good thoughts on this. Our plant is a little over 20 years old, lots of stuff reinvented every few years, moved here & there, etc. Quite often a problem to get up to a light or anything else. Machines on the floor with pipes & brackets of every description. I've seen similar in other plants where I've done work. I think I do recall 1 plant from back in the 70's that had lots of catwalks across the ceilings. We didn't use them but that did look some easier to access things up there. What have any of you seen out there?

These days OSHA concerns about fall protection can make catwalks a less attractive solution.

Can't catwalks have hand rails? We could still use harnesses to get from them to a light or equipment.
