ceramic wire nuts

Is there a minimum voltage rating on a wire nut? I am getting ready to order
some ceramic wire nuts that are rated for 300 volts, were as the best I can
tell a regular wire nut is rated for 600 volts. We plan on using these
ceramic wire nuts on 480 3 phase heaters.

Re: ceramic wire nuts

Since your phase to ground voltage would be 277V you might be alright with the 300V wirenut. I'm sure I'll get jumped on if I'm wrong. :D

Re: ceramic wire nuts

That?s how I felt. The concern came from the fact that everything else I work with is rated for 600 volts. I didn't know if possibly the wire nut was more porous this is why the lower voltage rating due to it's potential to hold moisture.

Re: ceramic wire nuts

If the conductors come apart under load, wouldn't the voltage across the connection be 480V?
IMO the voltage rating is inadequate for the application since the potential from conductor to conductor going to the heater is 480V, not 277V.

That makes good sense Rick, thank you. I did come across a 600-volt hi temp wire nut and I am planning on using it. Thanks for the replies.

:) :) :)

Re: ceramic wire nuts

I'm curious what the temperature rating of the conductors the wire nuts will be used for is.

I certainly like the idea of ceramic in a heater. But I don't think it would be necessary to go beyond the conductor insulation temperature.

And 300 v. seems pretty low for a voltage rating. Maybe another manufacturer?

Re: ceramic wire nuts

What's the temp rating of that high-temp wirenut?

Who makes it?

Model?

Cost?

Always good to know these kind of things -- you never know when I might need that.

Model?
31, 33, 35 & 37 are 600 volt
Cost?
69 - 266 per 1000

Re: ceramic wire nuts

I see, you're probably doing something more related to building them than installing them.

Edit: error A
