Hi

My name is beth and i have question about certification and how to obtain this cerfitication. My boyfriend works for a sign company and he installs huge signs, for example, sunoco diamonds and other big gas station signs. He is very good with electrical. i was wondering if one has to take a class or classes to be eligible to be certified in the state of PA. If anyone could give me the information it would be greatly appreciated.

(i have tryed emailing the schools and the board of pa but they never e-mail me back)

Re: certification

Certified for what?

Actually, Pa doesn't have a state-wide LICENSING procedure for electrical contractors. Instead, most municipalities/townships have their own requirements for obtaining a license to practice, as well as their own codes. Certification (from an approved educational institution) may be one requirement in your township, but most also require several years of previous work history in the employ of a licensed master electrician, as well as passing an exam.

Re: certification

UL has a program where they certify "panel shops." Many, if not most, sign shops are inspected under this program, which allows the shop to apply the UL lable to every sign that they make.
For the details, you'll have to contact UL.
