Hello to all,

Are Challenger breakers allowable in a Siemens I-T-E panel?

Broader question, are there any cases where there are allowable breakers in any panel where the allowable breakers aren't listed on the panel's label?

Thanks,
Shane in KC

So, do you have to research each case, or is there some sort of table/database that lists whose breakers are classified for whose panels? In other words, how do you know Challenger breakers aren't allowed in Siemens panel? I trust you, just not sure how you figured it out.
Thanks.

Listed Challenger breakers (now Cutler Hammer) were never and are still not listed or classified for use in Siemens panelboards. Here is one list I put togther:

Manufacturer: Replaces

Eaton (Cutler Hammer):
Square D Homeline
Crouse-Hinds MP
Siemens Q
GE THQ
Murray MP
Thomas and Betts TB

Thomas and Betts:
Westinghouse BR
Challenger C
GE THQL (GFCI only)
Murray MP
Siemens Q

Siemens:
Square D QO

Miami Breaker:
ITE (Molded-Case Versions)

Connecticut Electric and Switch:
Zinsco
Pushmatic
FPE Stablok
Wadsworth

A classified breaker will come with a list of panelboards they are suitable for replacement in.

I have a Cutler Hammer document in front of me that says their CL115 is a classified breaker to replace a Siemens Q115. The document is Eaton Publication #SA00304001E dated August of 2002.
Don

That's correct Don. A CH CL 115 is classified for use in certain Siemens Q panels as shown in my list, however an orginial listed Challenger breaker is not .

Sorry Scott, the document doesn't translate well on the Forum.

Take for example the first manufacturer on the list, Cutler Hammer. They manufacture CLASSIFIED breakers for replacement in certain Square D Homeline panels, certain Siemens Q panels, ect... Or take Siemens, they manufacture a Classified breaker for use in certain Sqaure D type QO panels.

If you notice, Square D does not produce CLASSIFIED breakers. They object to there use.
