Refring to chapter 9 Tabel 8 conductor poperties a.one inch = 1000 mills and area in cmill=Dmills squared. If that is the case then 4/0 wire has a diameter of.528 inches 0r 528 mils. Then if i plug this into my formula A=Dm squared I get 528x528=278,784 circular mills however tabel 8 shows the crcular mills for 4/0 at 211,600 my number is closer to 300 kcmills what gives ???? Is it because the notes at the bottom of the page say coated strands ??

When you use the OD of the conductor that number includes the spaces between the individual strands that make up the conductor.

1000 mills = 1 inch refers to a solid conductor. If you look at the conductor 1000 kcm you will see that the diameter is not 1 inch but 1.152 inches.
