Now that is a good picture....it looks like it's completely beyond redemption. Short of gas and a match, did you manage to fix any of it?

This was in a small diner that used to be a service station, I was called to add a 20amp circuit for an ice machine that was tripping a overloaded circuit. I couldnt believe my eyes when I popped the cover off. If you look at that lone empty knockout to the right, thats where I installed my nice new MC cable. I tried to convince the owner to a changeout to no avail, he said "the whole place looks like this". I made a note of all the needed corrections on the invoice, snapped a few picts for reference, then told him never make a late insurance payment.....by the way, after installing the new circuit i got a amp reading of 20.3amps on the new dedicated circuit, told him time for a new compressor......

My old eyes don't see the feeder grounded conductor.(or does that come in the bottom?)

I think I see it ,.. is it stuffed in the top left with another cable:-?

Those studs don't look very old ( meaning recent work).

It would be interesting to know how they got a business license to open a diner with the electrical in such a mess.

Most areas inspect the tenant space or building before the issue of a business license. I thought every place would if you are serving food.

I wouldn't have touched it either.

You were the last one there so, disclaimer or not, your name is on it.

I walked away from a restaurant with wiring like that last winter. Found out latter they hired someone who wasn't worried about losing thier license to do what I refused. Probably for 50% less too!

how exactly would I be violating SC contracting law to loose my SC Mechanical License?, the way i see it, if the place burns down the worst that could happen would be a battle between his insurance company and mine. between the picts and the signed off invoice his company wouldnt have a leg to stand on. heck thats why I carry insurance. no laws are broken by installing a circuit, SC licensing board could care less.

Only a non-electrician could create an abortion like that. ;)

Wanna bet-- I have seen almost this exact scenario in a panel and I won't even get into the rest of the house. Licensed electrician did the work.

Well maybe just one-- undercabinet lights were sockets screwed to the cabinet with lamp cord running to them-- exposed sockets and terminals.

Nuff said....

I would refuse to add anything to that mess, I would have to clean that mess up before I would tie into it...

I second that,

One would have to assume the original installation was done without pulling a permit or inspection-

Wow thats ugly....

In addition to the comments on your billing, I would suggest you go get a permit for the work and then call for an inspection and let the AHJ deal with the owner.

permits not required for work under $200, bill was $185, what could AHJ do? its called pre-existing non-compliance. the only thing he could inspect would be the new circuit. it dosnt matter anyway, the fire chief and the AHJ signed off on it 2 yrs ago when the diner was opened. good ol boy system here i guess. they made him build this box over the exposed wires.. this is it without the pywood cover, I had removed this before I removed the panel cover.
