I guess the idea behind testing you tester is not so unreasonable.
I own a Fluke 12 Multimeter. As the battery begins to die, the voltage reading starts to creep up. It has got as high as 160-volts to ground on a nominal 120-volt system. The first time it did this to me, I had the POCO out to a service call and it was a big embarassing mess.
Maybe we should go back to licking our fingers and tapping the conductor as one of my old instructors told me they used to do.
