I am going to take the Chicago Supervising Electricians test next year.
I have given myself a year to study for the test.
It looks like they adhere very closely to the NEC 2005 code wording.

I've been in this field for 38 years (mostly industrial instrumentation and controls). I have an Associate degree in EET from Purdue Univ.
I am a journeyman electrician (1976) and have worked for a year as a High Tension Lineman during the course of my career. It is now a job requirement with my employer, to take and pass the Chicago test.

Even with my background and experience, I have heard the horror stories about taking the Chicago test. (mostly from those who failed) I guess I'm looking for some reassurance and insight from those who have been down this road before.

I'm not going to blow any sunshine up your skirt, but I don't want to scare you off, either. I took the test a couple of cycles ago and it is by far the hardest NEC exam I have ever taken. I think it was partly due to the unfamiliarity that I had with their Code book, even though it is laid out similar to the NFPA book. At the five minute to go mark, I still had 3 unanswered questions and had to throw answers at them and did not even have time to go back and check any answers.

I did pass it on the first try, but I saw several guys who turned in their answer sheets and said " See you next time" knowing they had no chance of passing.

There will be a lot of people at the test. Stake out an end seat if you can get one and take a deep breath and relax. You will not find all of the answers, so accept that and try to get as many as you can.

One other thing - Don't pay for the "prep" class they offer. It's not worth it.

Good luck. Let us know how you do on it.
