Chiller disconnecting means

I have just recieved drawings for the replacement of 2 chillers. The existing chillers were installed in the early 80's and have a lockable fused disconnect within sight.
The first chiller is fed from a 500A breaker inside the main electric room which is in the basement of the building 200ft away from the chiller. The drawings show for us to remove the disconnect and install a splice can to re-use the existing feeders.
The second one is on the roof of a 3 story building. It is fed from a 500A breaker located in the main electric room on the 1st floor. The drawings also show for us to remove the fused disconnect and install a splice can.
Now the new chillers are 200 ton 480/3 that have a disconnect built into them at the control panel. My question is by code do we need a disconnect other than the one built in to the chiller? Thanks

Not if the internal disco is externally operable. There's no harm in leaving the redundant ones in-line. There's also nothing wrong with gutting the existing disco's and splicing within them.
