Chirping smokes

I ran into a problem where a ceiling fan was wired to the same circuit as the smoke detector located in the same room. While the ceiling fan was operating, the smoke detector would chirp every so often. Is there a filter of some sort that could be connected in line with the fan to correct this problem? I was discussing this with a coworker and he told me he had the same problem with an attic fan that had been wired to the same circuit as the smoke detector and was causing the same problem.

Re: Chirping smokes

Smokies chirp when the battery is low. I would guess the motor is confusing the electronics in the smokie. Check with an electronics store (Radio Shack?) to see if they have a 60 cycle filter for you.

I would check and re do all the connections. There is no reason for this too happen.Maybe sparky tapped it for power and made a bad connection.Check to see if the ground is complete thru all the smokes. If that doesn't fix it Replace the smoke. We are assuming the bat is new.Be carefull if you add a filter that it is UL approved.Never seen this happen over a fan but plenty over connections. Is there a chance the wind from fan is pissing the smoke off.Keep in mind the distance from smokes to fan blades( i believe it's 30 inches or 3 ft)

Re: Chirping smokes

Sounds more like a loose wire on the fan that looses connection once in a while. sometimes the little plug in inside of the light mount housing wont make a good connection. one of the pins will back out when it is pushed together. A loose conection will cause a spike to be induced into the circuit this could cause the smoke to chirp. maybe a MOV or a plug in surge protector somwhere in the room close as possable to the smoke?
