Chlorine?

Got a call from the water department regarding a couple of receptacles located right by the chlorine they say are disintegrating. New topic for me. Thoughts? sorry for the limited info.....headed up there to look at the layout now.

Did some work in a pump house.. everything was/is disintegrating.

They should know not to install anything electrical where there are chlorine vapors. It eats just about anything metal including a lot of "stainless" steels.

There are really only a few options. The most obvious is not to install outlets in this area.

If you have to install outlets there, you might try trying to improve the ventilation and/or reduce the level of fumes.

I have seen varying degrees of success using air purging to keep fumes away from electrical equipment. I suppose you could try to pressurize the other end of the conduit that feeds these outlets.

thanks all.

As soon as I saw the existing set up, I knew why the receptacles failed so quickly (the building is only about 1 or 2 years old).

Chlorine drums on floor.
3 pumps on shelf with receptacles behind them.
Above that is the piping the chlorine is being pumped into.

The chlorine piping is flexible plastic tubing which drips often and requires maintenance/cleaning regularly. Just moving the receptacle location up and to the side is going to greatly increase their life.
