I have church assembly with occupancy of more than 100. For branch circuits and feeders inside building from panel, MC cable is running without enclosed in raceway. I suppose nec 2014 518.4(a) says MC cable is ok wiring method but not sure about without enclosed in raceway. Is MC cable required to be enclosed in raceway?

Reading that code section, I am confused why you ask. It doesn't say anything about enclosing MC in a raceway. The biggest thing to take away from this for me and what I point out to my guys in the filed is that you can't come up inside a wall INCLUDING AN OPEN CELL IN MASONRY BLOCK with PVC conduit.

I read not just previous post but magazines that MC cable is not pre wired raceway or a raceway. For any cable protection it needs to be enclosed in raceway.

So I looked at 518.4(a)(1) it does not say anything about enclosing but its not in raceway either. So it can be without raceway inside building?

Read all of article 330 and take special note of 330.10 and 330.12

Roger

Not is using it in cable trays, not as service entrance cable, not sirect buried.

Use in wall or under ceiling. Its permitted to be in any raceway but not required 330.10. I guess.

Yo are correct, MC is not a raceway, but that article doesn't require all cables to be installed in raceway either.

No you should be fine. U r stating you are wiring a church that can hold more than a 100 people at a time correct? If so wiring the structure in MC is fine.

I have outside pvc conduit into service disconnect attached outside and then load side of service disconnect outside pvc going into church building first panel. Should those be metal?

If I recall, only need MC/ pipe in the actual large assembly area the rest Romex, dependant on code, building id rating, etc..

You are misinterpreting:
The fixed wiring methods shall be metal raceways, flexible metal raceways, nonmetallic raceways encased in not less than 50 mm (2 in.) of concrete, Type MI, MC, or AC cable.

What it means is:

The fixed wiring methods shall be any of the following:
1. metal raceways
2. flexible metal raceways
3. nonmetallic raceways encased in not less than 50 mm (2 in.) of concrete
4 Type MI ca ble
5. Type MC cable
6. Type AC cable.

The assembly area can be just a portion of the building, in a church that might only be the sanctuary. Some places may want the assembly area to be surrounded by at least a 1 hour finish or else they extend the assembly area to other spaces, this usually only an issue when dealing with older structures, new structures usually will have 1 hour rating around any individual assembly area.
