I am looking at plans for a 5000sq ft church and need help with 518.4 c.
The plans show the walls in the entrance hallway and hallway going toward rear of building to be 1 hr rated walls. The plans show no other rated walls between office rooms or kitchen/study rooms. The building will be framed with wood with solid celings. Can romex be used?

Places like the acutal sanctuary and other large meeting rooms in the church are places of assembly, and need metallic covered wiring methods. The other spaces can be wired with NM cable if you want to. I've found it best to have the plan reviewer actually outline the assembly areas on the print to eliminate any confusion.

I'd say no as it's a place of assembly.

It will depend.

First is it a place of assembly? (over 100 persons)

Next while the chapel might be a place of assembly the offices, bathrooms etc are not.

Ask the AHJ is a good suggestion.

I too will ditto asking the AHJ, or even the GC.... Looking at fire ratings of walls is not a way to tell - those 1 hr rated halls can just as likely be the means of eggress. And the entire building type be type 1 or 2 by some local zoning. (~generaly speaking~)

I worked on a church with two small apartments above office space awhile ago and the AHJ wanted MC or conduit throughout.

In my opinion it is likely the AHJ in that case asked for to much.

They apparently took the CYA approach.

This particular AHJ has been mentioned in another post resently,in a not to flattering manner.
