cieling boxes

Good Mrning everybody I had a ?,is it a code violation to use a piece of 2 by4 conv. lumber to install my cieling fan outlet box . Or do I have to install a ul listed metal hanger. Thank You...

I wouldn't have a problem with it as long as you use the screws that come with the box and not a couple of drywall screws.

If the octagon box is a standard box, ie, not fan rated, than you can mount the fan providing you are not fastened to the box. Use long wood screws into the 2x4 and you are good to go.

I do it that way with fan rated pancakes all the time and no problems yet.
