Circuit Breaker Max Mounting Height

For one of my jobs, a circuit breaker in a panelboard will be mounted above 6 ft 7 in.

404.8(A) states that if it used as a switch it's highest position can not be above 6 ft 7in.

My opinion is that it will not be used as a switch because a toggle switch located in another area will provide on/off control for the equipment.

This relates to 404.11 as well.

So, if the circuit breaker is not used as the switch, can it be mounted higher than 6 ft 7 inches?

I don't see why not. But just for curiosity, if you don't mind my asking, why does it have to be that high?

It is a 1,200 amp panelboard located in a Class I Division 2 location (maintenance garage).

The bottom of the panelboard already has to start out 18" above floor.

So this leaves the top breaker at 88" above floor. This is 9" over the height stated in 404.8.

All circuit breakers are used as switches at some point. You will have to build a platform 9" in front of the panel.

I agree. Also 240.24(A) does not stipulate "used as a switch" for the height requirement.

The platform must also be the proper width and depth to qualify as a working platform, look at 110.26 to determine the width and depth. rsi is 30 wide by 36 deep 460 volt is a larger platform , 30 x 48 I think.The platform must aslo be permanent. Yoyucan meet the rerquirement with a wodden platform as long as it is permanatly installed. Bolted to the floor,.
