Re: CIRCUIT BREAKERS AS SWITCHES

You're not being very specific about "motors" as well as "lighting."
A simple wall switch will control the motor of a bathroom vent fan as well as lights.

Re: CIRCUIT BREAKERS AS SWITCHES

A molded case circuit breaker can be used as:
A motor disconnecting means
A motor branch short circuit and ground fault protection device
A motor overload device
A motor controller.
The rules change according to the HP of the motor.
When you say "switch" which of the above are you referring to?

Re: CIRCUIT BREAKERS AS SWITCHES

The only caveat I can find is 240.83(D), which restricts CBs used as switches (no other means of switching in the circuit) for fluorescent or high intensity discharge lighting to SWD or HID respectively listing and marking.
Keep 110.9 in mind, too. All CBs will have a minimum interuppting capacity of 5000 amps (240.83(C)). If your circuit needs more, make sure your CB has it!
