In an Industrial setting, is it required that existing panelboards (14 years old) have all their circuits identified on the cover or door? Most are when changes are made but, the rest would require some serious investigation.

14 years ago could put the install under the '93 code. '93 NEC 384-13, All panelboard circuits & circuit modifications shall be legibly identified as to purpose or use on a circuit directory located on the face or inside of the panel doors.

Hope this helps. Ron:)

OSHA requires it as well: Rule 1910.303(f)(2) reads "Services, feeders, and branch circuits. Each service, feeder, and branch circuit, at its disconnecting means or overcurrent device, shall be legibly marked to indicate its purpose, unless located and arranged so the purpose is evident."

I have the same problem but since I'm just a one man marching band it is impossible to trace down every circuit that goes on out through the facility. My suggestion would be that when problems that do arise and require them to be traced down from the panel, write them down at that time. Other wise it could take you a few men and several hundreds of man hours (depending on size of facility) to track them all down.

I tend to agree with you as I was a plant electrician for seven years. Keep marking the new stuff, you know how important it can be that not only do you shut down the right circuit, but it can be just as important that you don't shut down the wrong one.

When we would get slow, we would get out a circuit tracer and a box of those little green stick on dots. We would pick and area and go throuh it and put a dot on the outlets or equipment we traced out and remark the panel.
