I wanted to make sure I was right on a basic equipment clearence question. Went to a job today and HVAC were installing dehumidifiers in the house. Change orders we all found out about today and yesterday. Anyway, I go into the equipment room where I have 600 amp disconnect and ATS and HVAC techs were in the process of mounting the dehumidifiers over the ATS. My first thought was the height clearences and I told them I would have to double check the 6 1/2 ft necessary. It then dawned on me as they were attatching their duct work and that this was not allowed within 6' over the diconnect. I very rarely deal with this so I do not want to tell them wrong. Thanks.

You are correct. Above the working space (i.e., the area in front of the equipment, at least 30 inches wide, at least 36 inches deep), there can be nothing below 6.5 feet above the ground. But you can have duct work above the working space, as long as it is higher than that. Above the equipment itself, you can have nothing for a distance of 6 feet higher than the top of the equipment. If there is duct work over the equipment, it must be more than six feet above the top of the equipment, and there must be a drip shield between the duct and the equipment. It's all in 110.26.

Yes. Thankyou. That is how I read it, but in 12 years of x # of houses I have never dealt with it so I wanted to be sure because they are now going to have to work much harder to find a place for this thing. Gotta love change orders.

thom, Just to be sure, on the second part of what Charlie b wrote, that

space is only as big as the footprint of the equipment, not the work area.

Yes. Equipment and duct can be above but not in the working space but not within 6' directly abve the electrical equipment.
