Class 1, Div 1 Pipe Nipple

I read a different string (linked below) on this topic but would like a little more clarification if possible. I work for an OEM of explosion proof electrical equipment and was recently approached by a customer who requested us to fit one of our explosion proof products with an explosion proof junction box and pipe nipple. I can easily find a explosion proof junction box but after a litle digging around, I'm realizing that explosion proof pipe nipples don't exist. The nipple needs to be 1/2" male NPT on both ends and needs to be as short as possible. Because our product is not hermetically sealed, it would require a lead seal when installed in a Cl 1, Div 1 environment.

My first question is: Is a lead seal require between the junction box and our product if the distance is less 36"? Based on 501.15(A.3), I'm interpreting that lead seals aren't required but want to be sure

My second question is: Is any HazLoc certification required for a short pipe nipple as described above? From what I've read on the forum linked below, certification aren't required, but does it need to be a listed component?

I'm not a NEC expert (or even novice) by any stretch so I apologize if these questions are stupid.

(501.15(A.3)) Two or More Explosionproof Enclosures. Where two or more explosionproof enclosures for which conduit seals are required under 501.15(A)(1) are connected by nipples or by runs of conduit not more than 900 mm (36 in.) long, a single conduit seal in each such nipple connection or run of conduit shall be considered sufficient if located not more than 450 mm (18 in.) from either enclosure.

Please forgive my ignorance; but I have no idea what a "lead seal" is.

That said, every raceway penetration into an enclosure that is required to be explosionproof requires a seal consistent with Section 501.15(C) within 18" of the enclosure. Section 501.15(A)(3) is simply saying that a single seal can serve "double duty" when installed in a 36" run as long as it is within 18" of both enclosures.

A nipple, factory or field made from RMC [Article 344] raceway is, recognized to be suitable. There may be some debate about this. Factory made nipples are required to be listed [Section 344.6]; field made nipples are suitable [Section 500.8(A)].

I was referring to a sealing fitting (see link below.) For some reason, everyone calls them a lead seal where I work.

So based on your response below, would you recommend connecting two explosion proof enclosures with a single RMC nipple? I would be purchasing a factory made one so I would look for something that's UL listed.

You can use a single seal but two nipples would be necessary as a minimum. Odds are, you would also need an explosionproof union so a third nipple is likely. The union could be on either side of the seal.
