Class 1 div 1 allows RMC or IMC for conduit correct? Class 1 div 2 gives 501.10a and added cable types for cables. MY questions is whats the real difference between the 2 other than the 2 cable types accepted for locations. I am having trouble understanding 501.10 b 3 nonincendive field wiring. does this mean I can use regular wiring methods in class 1 div 2 areas? I am just trying to get familiar with this portion of code for a new job we might be getting.

Note: It would be helpful to ask questions of this nature in the Hazardous (Classified) Locations forum.

The essential difference is Section 501.10(A)(1)(a) specifies that RMC and IMC are threaded; this is not a requirement in Section 501.10(B)(1)(1). In addition, Section 501.10(A)(1)(a) requires IMC to be steel; RMC may be any construction otherwise recognized in Section 344.100.

Nonincendive field wiring may indeed use any Chapter 3 wiring method otherwise recognized for the environment; however, it must also be consistent with an applicable control drawing. (See the definition in Article 100)
