A large part of the wiring I am associated with is done in Class 1 Division 1&2 areas. While reviewing the requirements in 500.8 (A) (1) I discovered what I think is an error in the 2002 NEC book. It states that Class 1 equipment shall not have any exposed surface that operates at a temperature in excess of the ignition temperature of the specific gas or vapor. The point I am making is if the equipment can operate at the ignition temperature of the specific gas or vapor it doesn't matter if it goes any higher since the gas or vapor would have ignited as soon as it reached the ignition temperature. Does anyone else have a different read on this.
