Hello every one, I have two questions:

1. Does flex water tight conduits can be used and meet the NEC requirement for Class 1 Division 2 and Group D area?

2. Can horns and strobes be located in a building that is class 1 and division 2? does it have to be explosion proof

Thanks in advance,

  • Liquidtight flexible raceways, both metal and non metallic are acceptable in Class I, Division 2. See Sections 501.10 (B) (2) ( 3) & (4). Be sure to read 501.10 (B) (2) also.
  • Yes. See Section 501.150 (B) for requirements.

Thank you Bob for your reply!

I'm reading section : 501.10.(B).2

" 2) Flexible Connections Where provision must be made for limited flexibility, one or more of the following shall also be permitted"

What does "limited flexibility" means? I have seen an installation where they have used a Liquidtight flexible nonmetallic conduit to connect two devices (eye wash alarm light), the conduit run is about 6 feet. Is there a limit of the run you can use.
(This installation is in room classifies as class I, division 2)

Thanks again for you help,

In general, limited flexibility refers to moderate vibration or the need to accommodate small movements. Where greater flexibility is necessary Section 501.140 is the relevant text.

In Division 2, liquidtight flexible metal conduit (LFMT) is basically permitted to be installed per any method otherwise recognized by the NEC with a few specific extra requirements in Article 501. One, all associated fittings are required to be listed. (This is now a redundant requirement in light of Section 350.6) Second, some additional requirements are imposed where LFMC is used as an equipment grounding conductor. See 501.30(B).

THere are some constraints on length in Section 250.18.
