Re: Class 1 Division 2 boundries

What do you mean by "how many feet"? Are you asking in regard to sealing fittings? The boundry is at the point in which you enter or leave the classified location.

Re: Class 1 Division 2 boundries

From 2002 NEC:
500.4 General.
(A) Documentation. All areas designated as hazardous (classified) locations shall be properly documented. This documentation shall be available to those authorized to design, install, inspect, maintain, or operate electrical equipment at the location.
If you cannot already tell where the boundaries are, it can be reasonably assumed that either proper documentation does not exist or you are in the process of creating the proper documentation.

Except for a few limited cases, such as Articles 511 through 517, the NEC does not directly specify how an location is to be classified. Section 500.4(B) FPN No. 2 refers to other codes and standards that will assist in determining the boundaries of classified locations. Those boundaries are part of what must be "properly documented."

If you are in the process of creating the proper documentation the most likely standard you will use is NFPA 497, but check to see if one of the other standards listed in the FPN applies.

Note: The requirement to have proper electrical area classification documentation is retroactively enforceable under OSHA's Process Safety Management standards.
