Hi all, I am new to this forum. Looks great.

I have to put single loop controller in a Class 1 Div 2 area. The unit will be in a cabinet with its face exposed to the area. The controller documentation says that it is rated for Class 1 Div 2 area and is a non incendive device. Are there any special protection methods I must use when installing this device. I guess as a general question, if a device is rated a class 1 div 2 area do I have to do anything like purge the panel, put IS barriers on it, etc.

The device itself requires no special protection, assuming it is installed according to manufacturer s's instructions.

Thanks Bob. Your help is appreciated. What irks me a little bit is that I have been over engineering things on the past couple of projects based on poor engineering specificatoins pushed down to me from the engineering firm and a lack of solid understanding of the code on my part which did not allow me to push back. I went back and looked at one in particular that required me to purge an operator interface terminal that was in a c1d2 area and which was rated for a c1d2 area. Looking back, the panel did not need to purged. However, I had to shell out $1500 for a purge unit plus the install cost for routing air to the unit, and long term cost of the air. All of this by the way was not budgeted for in my project budget.

The installation instructions should list any specific requirements. No purging is required for THAT device but if you have other electrical equipment within the same enclosure you may need to purge it because of those not being suitable for the area. You may need to power it from a non-incendive power supply in which case you need to follow the wiring instructions supplied for the power supply itself.
