I was wondering if you could help me out with a Hazardous Area question.........

Realizing Class 1 pertains to Gases and Class 2 pertains to Dust.

IF a Device is Class 1 Division 1 Group C and D rated is it also Class 2 Division 1 Group C and D rated???

The basic rule is in Section 500.8 It?s a fairly long Section, but essentially, equipment must be identified (and usually marked) for each Class, Division, Group and Temperature Class for which it is to be installed. See Section 500.8(B).

There are several ?Special Allowances? [500.8(B)(6)]but none that automatically permits a Class I identification to be applied to a Class II installation.

The reference to ?Class 2 Division1, Group C&D? may be the problem. Class II materials are Groups E, F and G.

Section 500.8(A)(2) generally permits ?Equipment that has been identified for a Division 1 location shall be permitted in a Division 2 location of the same class, group, and temperature class ??

You are correct........It appears that the real problem is that they need group Group G. (Coal)
Are there any exceptions relatting to this????

No. What they apparently need is something identfied for Class II, Division 1, Group G. In this case, it most likely will need to be marked [500.8(B)] to identify it. Since I don't know the specific application, I can't be more specific.
