Class 2 Circuits in patient care areas?

I would like some help figuring out the intent of 517.80 NEC 2002.
It states,"Equivalent insulation and isolation to that required for the electrical distribution systems in patient care areas shall be provided for communications, signaling systems, data system circuits, and systems less than 120 volts, nominal."

My initial thoughts would be that the same wiring methods be used, i.e. conduit, AC cable, etc. for class 2 circuits in a patient care

I guess I never really though much about this paragraph. If it requires conduits, etc, this would seem to prohibit telephones in hospital rooms!!! Also, I know nurse call systems have wires that are exposed. So what gives?

At any rate, I would guess that anything above the ceiling grid would be "out" of a patient care area, and this paragraph would not apply.

Steve thanks for the reply. I'm trying to gain any information on this section as the AHJ in my area thinks it is an issue.
