I worked in a flour mill/flour packing facility. We are installing a new flour packing machine into our building. There is aspiration for the little flour dust that will be produce by this machine to eliminate dust emissions into the surrounding area. Does the electrical enclosures need to be dust-tight or dust ignition proof? Also is an enclosure rated nema 12 considered dust tight?

Re: Class 2, Division 2?

NEMA 12 may be marked "Dusttight."

As you describe it, I do not believe the location is Class II, Division 2 based on NFPA 499.

Re: Class 2, Division 2?

What would this area be classified as? I would think maybe Class 2 Division 2 but not a Class 2 Division 1.

Re: Class 2, Division 2?

I'm sorry I wasn't clearer  I don't think its classified at all.

My copy of NFPA 499 is 1998 "hardcopy" so I don't want to type too much. :D The 2004 edition hasn't changed much. If you can get access to one, I'd read Sections 3.3.1 and 3.3.2. What you described appears to be an application of 3.3.1(b) and (e). Section 3.3.2 is cautionary.
