A thermostat circuit in a single family dwelling is rated Class 2 power limited operating at 24 volts. A listed cable less than 1/4 in. (6mm) in diameter permitted for this application but not permitted to be installed in a commercial building without raceway protection is Type:
A.CL2 B.CL3 C. CL2P-C1 D.CL2R
Where in the NEC 2008 Code book is the answer to this ques. I have read Art.725 from one end to the other and can't find it can someone please help me

I don't think any of the answers you have listed are correct for the question. Take a look at 725.179(D).

It's really a misleading question. All those cables would be allowed in a commercial building. However if the space where the cable is to be run is an air handling space (commonly above some ceilings) then only a CL2P or CL3P plenum listed cable could be used. All others would need to be in raceway. But it's not stated if the space where the cable is to be run is air handling and that's the key to this question. Not all commercial space requires plenum. I guess you would have to second guess what the test writer's is getting at and assume that commercial= requiring plenum. So the correct answer would be that A, B and D are not permitted. C, CL2P could be used without raceway. (I have no idea what CL2P-C1 is. Is that a typo?)

Perhaps it is supposed to be "CI" for circuit integrity?
