I'm working on a project where an interceptor basin catches drain water from outboard motor test tanks. It drains to a sump basin with sewage ejector pumps which are listed as class I division 1. Code official brought up classified locations, I'm assuming because gasoline vapor could be present. I'm trying to determine boundaries of classified areas. Tables in NFPA 30 and 820 and NEC 515 (not directly applicable, bulk tanks) list entire pit or basin which makes sense to me. I'm trying to determine if a class 1 division 2 boundary exists outside basin which should have a cover. looking for any help from those who've encountered similar situations or are more experienced in waste water or similar applications. Thanks as always for the help

In absence of a physical barrier, there is always an adjacent Division 2 envelope around Division 1. See Section 500.5(B)(2)(3). The cover would likely be the physical boundary; however, if there is an exhaust port or such there would be a small Division 1 envelope, (usually about 3') with an adjacent Division 2 envelope.

NFPA 820 should be your basic "go to" in this case.
