For Class II, Division 2, one is permitted to use EMT conduit as per Article 502.10(B)

Yet, in the code handbook, Exhibit 502.1, there is a picture of a junction box with threaded hubs suitable for, it reads, "Class II, Group E" area's.

Just as I found there are no receptacles listed for Class II, Division 2, Group E, I'm now wondering if there are any listed boxes for these area's other than this type of threaded box.

If this is true, EMT, by default is not permissible in any Group E area regardless of Division.

True?

Thanks,

Mike

Enclosures in Class II, Div 2 must be dusttight. If this classification requires hubs, then would a compression fitting on EMT not suffice fro what you wish to accomplish ?

Compression fittings

Compression fittings

Compression fittings are probably ok. But what I was asking about is J boxes. For these, I think the equipment needs to be listed for Class, Div and Group and what I suspect to be the case is that the only J box on the market listed for Group E, is a threaded box such as is shown in the code handbook. If only a threaded box is available, then you have to use RGS or IMC right?

By the way, the "requirement" that equipment be listed is actually in an FPN. As such, it's not, strictly speaking, a requirement. Still, I wouldn't want to be on the witness stand after the explosion explaining why I disregarded it. Would you? Here is the FPN.

FPN No. 2: The explosion characteristics of air mixtures of dust vary with the materials involved. For Class II locations, Groups E, F, and G, the classification involves the tightness of the joints of assembly and shaft openings to prevent the entrance of dust in the dust-ignitionproof enclosure, the blanketing effect of layers of dust on the equipment that may cause overheating, and the ignition temperature of the dust. It is necessary, therefore, that equipment be identified not only for the class but also for the specific group of dust that will be present.

Your fundamental problem is that there is no Division 2 option with Group E. See 500.5(C)(1)(3)
