I am starting work on a Natural Gas procressing plant next month. The plant pipe Natural Gas from approximately 5 miles away into storage tanks then removes the impurities and cleans the gas then refrigerates the gas and sell it to ATMOS the natural gas provider in our town. The one storage tank sets in area with a 15 foot concrete wall along one side and a 10 foot on the other with the building on the one end and open on the other. The tank is approximately 45 foot long and 10 foot tall. I believe that this is a Class 1 Division 1 and 2 area and Zone 1 and 2. with Rigid conduit to be run along the 15 foot tall wall on the opposite side of the tank. Am I right?? At the plant area I will be using a approx. 800KW generator to power the 600HP in motors needed to operate. The generator will be natural gas. How far away from the plant should the generator be. The way I read section 500.. I am thinking 10 foot min. Has anyone worked on one of these plants?

Thanks!!!

Bobby

The real answer to this is that somewhere there should be control documents that will tell you what the area classification is.

You can't just decide this on your own.

In what form do these documents exist? Typicals, or actual installation specific?

Someone, typically an engineer working for the architect, will make a set of prints that will be part of the building plans that will detail any classified areas.

The ones I have seen are usually an overlay of a plan view of the area with the classified areas hatched in.

The owners are the "engineers" There are no drawings or Architects. They purchased the equipment from various places in the United States. I have talked to one of my Electrical Inspectors. He suggested that we get a ruling from NFPA on what class and division the work will be. All of the equipment is outdoor.

They won't do that. You need to get a design engineer involved who is versed in classifing areas and have him provide a set of classification drawings.

The engineer may reference documents such as American Gas Association (AGA) XFO-277 and/or American Petroleum Institute API-500.

He should not be doing that...he needs to set the boundries, not just tell you what document to look at.

Class 1 Division 1?

Class 1 Division 1?

I contacted the State Inspector and he suggested a contact with the Haz-Mat department which will be inspecting the tanks.. a least according to the State Inspector. He said that the State Haz-Mat will determine the Class and Division then the State Inspector will approved the type of wiring method. The State Electrical Inspector will visit the site next week. I will post his decision.

Thanks

Can't the engineer refer to industry standards?
Yes, as a resource to help him draw the classification boundry drawings, but he can't just refer the installer to those documents.
