Classification of Area - Gasoline Distribution

I have an indoor area that is considering a central distribution of gasoline from an outside bulk tank (standard gasoline, not diesel). The indoor space is supplied through a small daytank. Would anyone with experience with this type of distribution be able to weigh in on whether or not this would fall under Article 514 of the code?

My interpretation is that assuming the room is small enough (less than 20'x20') that any area 18" or below would require Class 1, Division II electrical installation. Thank you for your input.

No experience myself, but I believe the location would be subject to the requirements of Article 514.

The only thing I can offer regarding your interpretation is you didn't state the actual location of the dispenser within the room. Say dispenser is in the corner of a 20x20 room, the hazloc extends to a 20' radial distance... so most of the opposing walls and some of the floor area would not be subject to the classification requirements (unless under the purview of another Article).

I assume you mean "dispensing" rather than "distribution". Depending on the size and placement of the day tank "distribution" could put you into Article 515 as well as 514. Ventilation will also play a part in an enclosed space.

There are many more considerations than just a quick look at Figure 514.3; Table 514.3(B)(1) also needs to be reviewed.

Classifying a location isn't rocket science, but it isn't a trivial exercise either. You should have a knowledgeable person that is or becomes familiar with the installation do the classification. Don't for get Section 500.4(A) either. It's an NEC, FedOSHA and most StateOSHA requirement.

Thank you for the responses. I am on the right track it seems. The system will be distributed but the interior day tanks are of sufficiently small size (per code) to keep us out of bulk storage requirements.

The interior areas that include the day tanks are small such that anywhere the day tank and dispensing is located within the space will essentially make the entire area up to 18" above the floor surface a class I, Div II area.

Mechanical ventilation is provided with greater than 6 air changes per hour at the floor level.
