We are currently bidding on chemical storage project. It is a warehouse that will be used to store various chemicals, some of which are flammable. The chemicals themselves will be housed in small (less than 1 gallon) approved containers. Upon researching the NEC it seems to me it may fall under being a Class 1 Division 2 location. The company just completed the same exact building in a different state and the electrical contractor did not install any explosion proof apparatus. My question is; how did they get away with this? Thank you for your help.

Class 1, Div. 2 sounds right for storage in closed containers. C1, D2 locations require a higher level of equipment than "ordinary" locations, but considerably less than the explosion proof appartus required in a C1, D1 location.

something not right

the nec codes usually give the listings of chemicals and the class and divisions they fall under, this is law! division1 one is usually in close radius to a point of loading flammamble chemicals, the fire inspectorate usually monitors this too space in buildin could b a consideration

i would think that as a warehouse, not a place where it is used or dipensed that it would be unclassified. this would also mean that no door of the building opens in to a class 1 area. just my thoughts.
