Hi,
have an opportunity to bid for powering several lifts in a automobile repair shop. The lift motors are 2 HP, single phase 208-230 v, and planning on using EMT from panel in same room. My question is, are automobile repair shops normally classified? There are no fueling done in this shop, it is a large room (around 70' x 70' ) with a high ceiling of around 22'. I can't imagine too high of a concentration of flamables in the day to day operations there, but thought I would ask you to share your experiences with similar jobs with me. Thanks, E/M.

Generally it would have a classified area up to 18 inches above the floor. Refer to 511.3 for classified and unclassified areas.

Without fueling or painting, it is probably a "minor repair garage". If so, the only classified areas will be below floor grade work areas, pits or other openings below floor level. If unventilated, these areas and the area above and within 3 feet to a height of 18 inches is classified as Class I, Division 2. See article 511 for definitions and possible additional requirements.
