Re: clear service distance

3', 3.5' or 4', depending on what is on the other side of it. See article 110.26, or respond and include what the item is that may be encroaching.

Re: clear service distance

I'm confused.

"Article 110.26A Working Space. Working space for equipment operationg at 600 volts,nominal......"

The handbook goes on to list "examples of such equipment include panelboards, switches, circuit breakers, controllers, and controls on heating and air conditioning equipment."

The question refered to an "appliance". (Let's include 120V appliances for the sake of discussion.) I've never thought of working space as applying to something like a stove or refrigerator or any other appliance that would plug in or be moveable.

So, my question is, does 110.26A apply to moveable or plug-in appliances?

I presume that the phrase ?service panel? is intended to mean a metal cover on one side of the appliance that you remove in order to gain access to the internals of the appliance (i.e., as opposed to a circuit breaker panel dedicated to service various appliance loads). To get an answer to your question, you first need to answer two questions: (1) Is it likely that a technician will be removing that panel to inspect or perform work on the internals of the appliance, without first turning off all power to the appliance? (2) When the technician works on the appliance, will the surface of the object behind him (or her) be connected to planet Earth? The most likely answer to both questions is ?Yes,? in which case your answer is ?42 inches.? But I will echo Ryan?s advice: look at NEC Article 110.26.

Aside to steve66: A more direct question might be, ?Does a moveable or plug-in appliance fit the description of ??likely to require examination, adjustment, servicing, or maintenance while energized,? which would require the application of Table 110.26(A)(1) for working clearances?? I don?t know the answer either. It might be an AHJ call.
