Hi.....
For clearance work space the 3' is taking from outside of the enclosure or from the lugs inside the panel.

Take a look at 110.26(A)(1) where it states that "Distances shall be measured from the exposed live parts or from the
enclosure or opening if the live parts are enclosed
."

Welcome to the Forum. :)

Work clearance

Work clearance

Hi everybody....
I have to install a vfd switch and need to know if the 36" clear apply to this type of switch and also if I should have 36" from outside of the enclosure or from the inside where the main breaker to the opposite wall.
The vfd is 24" deep and is taking a lot space if I start from the cover to opposite wall.

This is really an authority having jurisdiction call. I have seen some who want the clearances on disconnects etc. while others do not. If the VFD needs maintenance then clearances should apply. To be safe I would have the clearance as IMO that is what the code states.

Right know I a little bit confused because I asked another friend here in nyc and he told me that we allow to start measuring from inside the panel where the main lugs are locate, because some switches like vfd come with big enclosure like in my case.

110.26(A) Working Space. Working space for equipment operating
at 600 volts, nominal, or less to ground and likely to
require examination, adjustment, servicing, or maintenance
while energized shall comply with the dimensions of
110.26(A)(1), (A)(2), and (A)(3) or as required or permitted
elsewhere in this Code.

(1) Depth of Working Space. The depth of the working
space in the direction of live parts shall not be less than that
specified in Table 110.26(A)(1) unless the requirements of
110.26(A)(1)(a), (A)(1)(b), or (A)(1)(c) are met. Distances
shall be measured
from the exposed live parts or from the
enclosure or opening if the live parts are enclosed.

Your live parts are enclosed so that means you measure from the enclosure or opening.

Assuming NYC has not amended this.

There is no NYC amendment on this section so you measure from the front of the enclosure that contains the live parts. IMO a VFD requires the clearances of 110.26 which could be 36", 42" or 48" depending on the voltage and the condition outlined in Table 110.26(A)(1).

With the vfd cover closed I have 30" but if I measure with the cover open from life parts will get 18" more.
