Contact all of your competition within about a 20 mile radius and let them know that you are having a "garage sale" on a certain date and they are invited. List the major stuff and send out the invitations. :D

Re: closing down business--tools and materials?

You need to ask yourself two questions:

 • How much time are you willing to put into this effort?

 • How important is it to you to get a good price for the good stuff?
If the answers are both "Not Much," then I might suggest contacting a clearance agent. Let them run the sale, be it by auction or garage sale or whatever they think best, and then they will send you a check.

But if the answers are "Whatever it takes" and "Very," then you might sort out the good stuff and sell it via an Internet auction site (such as eBay).

By the way, congratulations on your retirement.

Hello Charlie T, I've been reading your posts for a while and admire your outlook on business. Seems like you had a good one! I would like to have some of those good customers you always mention!

Can you post some of the stuff you have for sale?

Sorry, that would be against the rules of the forum. However, if you use the PM system (see the FAQ), you can talk about anything you wish. :D

If it's an ongoing buisness why close it that way.Sell it to a new electrician.Take payments or even stay on as advisory for a few months.Likely to get more that way.

Re: closing down business--tools and materials?

I agree with jimwalker, you should sell the business lock, stock, and barrel. You might be surprised to find out how many people would jump at an opportunity like that.It sounds like a chance of a lifetime, some lucky person could take out a loan and buy his or her ready made company. Good luck in retirement and we'll see you on the forum. :)

Good point, we were just discussing this last week, there were two local EC's ready to retire, they both had businesses with same type of customers and same number of employees, one sold his business for $80,000 plus payments and the other, got 10 cents on the dollar.
