clothes dryer GFCI

I ran into a situation the other day I need help with. The 240v outlet for the clothes dryer was about chest high on the wall at the right front corner of the dryer. Very accessible to anyone using the machine. Should this outlet be GFCI protected?

Maybe a good idea but not a requirment by the NEC.
If the "laundry room" is in an unfinished basement, I believe GFCI protection is required for all receptacles that aren't used by the fixed-in-place laundry appliances.
